Grow Smart RI Celebrates 2017 Smart Growth Award Winners


Albert P. Valliere, Jr. vice president and chairman of Nation Wide Construction, will receive Grow Smart RI’s Outstanding Smart Growth Leader Award at Grow Smart RI’s annual awards celebration on Tuesday at the Stadium Theater in Woonsocket.

Valliere is among eight individuals and organizations that will be honored for their contributions on providing sustainable and economic growth in Rhode Island.

Valliere is described by Grow Smart Rhode Island as “a revitalization practitioner who’s left his mark in many city, town and village centers throughout the Blackstone Valley and Rhode Island.” Grow Smart recognized Valliere’s role in building Nation Wide Construction, Inc. and his support for building quality and affordable housing in Rhode Island.

“Each year, passionate, creative and resourceful Rhode Islanders show us the way to tap our state’s full potential through projects, plans and policies that play to Rhode Island’s strengths and generate enduring economic benefits, both statewide and in specific neighborhoods,” said Grow Smart’s Executive Director Scott Wolf.

Other award winners are:

  • For Outstanding Smart Growth Projects: Blackstone Valley Gateways – Pawtucket, Central Falls; Bristol Industrial Park, Bristol; Sankofa Apartments, Providence; WaterFire Arts Center, Providence; and Westerly Education Center, Westerly.
  • For Outstanding Smart Growth Policies/Plans – RI Woodlands Partnership Strategic Plan 2016-2020.
  • Special Founders’ Leadership Award – Howard M. Kilguss, Community Philanthropist/Business Leader and outgoing Grow Smart RI Board Chair.

 

Grow Smart Rhode Island describes itself as providing “statewide leadership for diverse public and private interests seeking sustainable and equitable economic growth. We promote such growth by advocating for compact development in revitalized urban, town, and village centers balanced with responsible stewardship of our region’s natural assets – farmland, forests, the coastline, and the Bay. We inform leaders, decision makers, and concerned citizens about the many benefits of compact development and asset stewardship and provide research and training on proven smart growth strategies. We convene broad coalitions that advocate policy reforms and specific projects designed to build communities where all people and businesses can thrive.”
