“Newport Folk Presents” is an ongoing series of concerts featuring past Newport Folk Festival performers. December is particularly good month to see several recent NFF artists in Providence, with three shows scheduled for the Columbus Theatre.
The Barr Brothers – December 7
The first of these shows at the Columbus Theatre features Providence natives, The Barr Brothers, who played NFF in 2015. The band, now based in Montreal, are comfortable playing stripped down acoustic sounds as well as atmosphere-laden full band jams. Their 2017 release, Queens of the Breakers was extremely well received – they even opened for The War on Drugs on their recent tour of Europe and the UK. They play Friday December 7th at the Columbus – Weather Station shares the bill. Click here for details.
Hiss Golden Messenger – December 15
Indie folk band Hiss Golden Messenger is the moniker for Durham, North Carolina’s MC Taylor’s roots/folk project. The Quad tent was overflowing during his inspiring 2018 Newport Folk set, where he jammed with Phil Cook among others. Hiss plays the Columbus on Saturday December 15. We’ll be there – Don’t miss it! Details here.
Matt the Electrician – December 16
Matt the Electrician has played Newport a couple of times, including a 2018 set where he was paired with folk veteran Chris Smither. The Austin, TX musician and former electrician writes and sings contemporary folk music, with lyrics that reflect the challenges of the 21st century. His songs are compelling and gentle on the soul. Mandolin Orange – February 9 at Royale Boston
In addition to the Providence shows, there’s also a Boston gig scheduled at The Royale with Mandolin Orange, another veteran of the Festival. That show is happening on February 9th. Details here.
Darlingside – December 9
We found one more! Although not an official “Newport Folk Presents” show, Darlingside, a fabulous band that played both Newport Folk and the Cambridge (UK) Folk Festival last summer, is coming to the Columbus Theatre on December 9th. Henry Jamison opens. Details here.
