With many national touring acts taking a break for the holidays, local shows dominate our weekly column “Six Picks.”  We’ve got shows from Westerly to Warren to Wakefield to Woonsocket this weekend. (Sorry Warwick). Check out some of our favorite RI bands! Happy Holidays!

Dead Gowns and Kate Mick Saturday at the Collaborative (Warren)

Dead Gowns are a new band from Portland, Maine with an intense slowcore sound. Saturday night, they’re playing at the Collaborative in Warren along with Kate Mick, who sings stark and powerful tunes accompanied by her banjo. We’ll be there reviewing the show – you should too! Details here.

Local Show of the Week: Ravi Shavi, NOVA ONE Saturday at AS220 (Providence)

Two of PVD’s top Indie bands hit AS220 Saturday when Ravi Shavi and NOVA ONE take the stage. It’s an album release show as well with Ravi Shavi’s long anticipated album “Blackout Deluxe” available on vinyl! Hip-Hop artist/Rapper NICE opens. Details here. 

Cowboy and Lady at the Pumphouse (Wakefield)

Cowboy and Lady are a country duo from Providence comprised of Cowboy, (and Silks guitarist) Tyler-James Kelly and Lady, Jess Powers. Their sound is classic and their harmonies are sweet – check them out with friends The Carleans and Dan Blakeslee Friday night at the Pumphouse in Wakefield.Details here. 

Chan’s Holiday Extravaganza Saturday (Woonsocket)

Another local treasure is Chan’s in Woonsocket known for “Egg Rolls and Jazz” (and a whole lot more). Saturday, it’s their annual holiday party with a slew of blues, jazz and R&B favorites. Jimmy “2 Suits” Capone hosts the bash with guests including Toni Lynne Washington, Willie J. Laws and many more. Full details here.

Sugar Ray and the Bluetones Saturday at the Knickerbocker (Westerly)

Head to the Knickerbocker in Westerly Saturday for some of the best R&B ever to come out of the Ocean State with Sugar Ray and Bluetones. Ray Norcia has played with blues greats including John Hammond, Johnny Winter and Pinetop Perkins and the band has been nominated for numerous national blues awards. T-Mac and the Prof’s Saturday at Nick-A-Nees (Providence)

Check out the rocking sounds of Tanya McIntyre and the Professors Saturday night at Nick-A-Nees in Providence. You’ll hear an eclectic mix of rock from recent decades and likely a few holiday tunes thrown into the mix. There’s a holiday food drive as well – details here.
