This week we celebrate some of our favorite artists at some of our favorite venues. Here’s “Six Picks,” some of the best music around the area this weekend!
Amy Helm Friday at the Narrows Center (Fall River)
Singer-songwriter Amy Helm has come into her own in recent years. Daughter of music legend Levon Helm, she returns to the Narrows Center with her band along with some new songs from her 2018 album This Too Shall Light, a release that includes original and tunes from Rob Stewart, Allan Toussaint and M.C. Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger). We’ll be there – check back over the weekend for photos and a review. Show details here.
James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt Saturday at the Dunk (Providence)
After a quiet spell of a few years, rock concerts are returning to the Dunkin Donuts Center! A few days after Mumford and Sons brought their high energy show to town, a pair of living legends come to the sold out arena. J.T. and Bonnie will undoubtedly shake things up in PVD, the show is sold out, but last minute tickets may show up here.
Local Show of the Week: RI Music Legends at the Stadium Theatre
Three legendary RI bands are clear favorites for the local show of the week. Head to the Stadium Theatre Saturday night for RI Music Hall of Famers Steve Smith and the Nakeds, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band and Roomful of Blues. You can’t get any more Rhode Island than that! Details on this show and more upcoming events at the Stadium Theatre here.
Rickie Lee Jones Sunday at Greenwich Odeum (East Greenwich)
Grammy award winner Rickie Lee Jones visits the Greenwich Odeum Sunday night for a intimate show. She is probably best known for her 1979 hit “Chuck E.’s in Love,” a jazzy ballad that didn’t seem to fit the song narrative of the era. She’s made numerous albums since, and is considered one of the greatest female artists of all time. We’ll be there Sunday – look for a review next week! Details here.
Mike and Ruthie Sunday at Fenner Hall (Newport)
Mike and Ruthie are the husband/wife team Ruth Ungar and Mike Merenda. The New York based duo are known for their high energy band The Mammals, as well as their genre-bending Americana sounds. They play Fenner Hall in Newport Sunday at 7PM. Details on the Common Fence Music show here.
Dwight and Nicole Saturday at Askew (Providence)
Check out Boston based indie-soul duo Dwight and Nicole Saturday night at Askew. Vocal powerhouse Julie Rhodes opens. Details here.
