The music doesn’t stop for the holiday weekend as we turn our attention to a couple of classic acts and some great local bands. Read “Six Picks” for some of the best in area music this weekend.

Chicago Friday at PPAC (Providence)

One of the most successful bands of all time returns to the Providence Performing Arts Center Friday. Songs like “Beginning,” “25 or 6 to 4” and “If You Leave Me Now” helped the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band get 23 gold, 18 platinum, and 8 multi-platinum albums. In the 1970’s, Chicago had five consecutive number-one albums and 20 top-ten singles. A few tickets remain – plan on two complete sets of all the hits – details here. 38 Special Saturday at Twin River (Lincoln)

38 Special brings their guitar driven sound to Twin River Saturday night. Behind hits like “Hold On Loosely” and “Rockin’ into the Night,” the band has kept the southern rock tradition alive. A few seats remain for the show. Details here.

RISSA Showcase at Saturday at Brooklyn Coffee House (Providence)

Three of the state’s best singer-songwriters play the monthly RISSA showcase Saturday night at the Brooklyn Coffee, Tea and Guest House. Hear original songs and stories from Steve Allain, John Fuzek and Kala Farnham at this monthly event that showcases the talents of RISA members and visiting artists as writers, musicians and performers.
