After a hike with friends at Trustom Pond in South Kingstown recently, I was pleasantly surprised when a member of the group suggested we recharge our batteries by visiting the Charlestown Rathskeller. A longtime South County favorite, I was happy to tag along since it would put me only ten minutes from home when finished.
We were a party of ten, so a lot was asked of our server and she did an admirable job accommodating us all, but it was still a daunting task. The food, however, did not disappoint. The Rathskeller is known for its excellent pub food and the shaved steak sandwich that day was the perfect example why people continue to trek back, many times for the same item that they’ve been ordering for years.
The crowd is an eclectic mix of locals and college students. The decor is a mix of German beer hall and Swamp Yankee hunting lodge; where you can catch a URI basketball game one night or a blues or reggae band out back a few nights, or months later.
And the best part about finding yourself there, you’ll always end up with a full belly, and you might just run into a long-lost college buddy, or see his kid in there with his/her friends. Don’t be afraid to take a ride and find out for yourself. The Rathskeller can be found at 489a Old Coach Rd., Charlestown, RI. Most of their menu is available for takeout at (401) 792-1000 and you can email them with general questions at firstname.lastname@example.org
