Six Picks Food: Thanksgiving Pie Guide 2019

Wright's Dairy Farm Pumpkin Pie

Thanksgiving is the ultimate foodie holiday, and it’s just around the corner! Whether you are hosting, or bringing your appetite to a loved one’s home, pie typically puts the punctuation on a Thanksgiving menu. We’re here to make sure that punctuation is an exclamation point, and not a question mark.

Today we’re checking out “Six Picks” for store-bought and homemade pie options that will transform your pie game. Let’s get started with three local bakeries offering up tantalizing seasonal pies perfect for the occasion.

Ellie’s (Providence)

Operating in a new location this year, directly across from the Providence Performing Arts Center, Ellie’s is accepting advance orders now through Thanksgiving Day on their website, via email (katie@elliesprov.com) or by calling 401-563-3333. Their fall offerings include a decadent Chocolate Pecan Pie and a festive Cranberry Meringue, just to name a couple.

Seven Stars Bakery (Providence, Cranston)

Did you know Seven Stars Bakery just opened a new location (their fourth!) on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston? This provides yet another option for where to pick up your pie. The bakery is accepting pre-orders for everything from breads to pastries and of course holiday favorites like Apple Cranberry Crumble Pie now through 6 p.m. on Friday, November 22nd on their online order form here in addition to in store orders.

Wright’s Dairy Farm & Bakery (North Smithfield)

Wright’s Dairy Farm is a Rhode Island institution when it comes to sourcing delicious baked goods for all occasions. For Thanksgiving, they feature a seasonal menu here including a variety of standard pie options (apple, pecan, pumpkin, etc) in addition to a centerpiece-worthy Centerpiece Pie, a pumpkin tart topped with whipped cream and a turkey-shaped cookie. If you’re looking for an elevated classic to grace your table, check out their order form here.

Bake Your Own!

If you want a little TLC in your Thanksgiving pie this year, bake it yourself! We’re including three fantastic recipes for creative pies that are sure to impress.

Black Bottom Oatmeal Pie

Dubbed “poor-man’s pecan pie” because oats are cheaper than pecans, this unique pie features a luscious layer of chocolate ganache beneath the sugary oat filling. When combined, it transforms into the ultimate oatmeal-chocolate-chip-cookie-turned-pie, a sweet alternative to a traditional pecan pie. The cozy, comforting flavors are perfect for fall, and ideal for a gathering of friends and family. The recipe is originally from the Four & Twenty Blackbirds pie shop in Brooklyn, NY, but is available here for your baking pleasure.

Maple Cream Pie

Another non-traditional pie option for your Thanksgiving menu is this silky Maple Cream Pie from the amazing folks at King Arthur Flour. As a seasonal twist to the plethora of cream pie varieties in the universe, maple really sets this pie apart from equally delicious but less Thanksgiving appropriate flavors. Your guests won’t know what hit them! Click here for the recipe.

Pear Ginger Oatmeal Crumb Pie

Look outside the typical apple pie box at another delicious fall and winter fruit that is perfect for pie filling: pear! Thin slices of pear are tossed with crystallized ginger, and topped with ground ginger-infused oatmeal crumb topping to yield one of the most surprising and impressive seasonal pies we’ve tried.
