Six Picks Events: The Best in Local Events this Weekend (Dec. 13-15)

The holiday spirit is alive in well this weekend in Providence, with a pair of signature events returning to PVD’s finest venues. Lots to do as always around RI!

Festival Ballet’s The Nutcracker at PPAC. (Providence). The annual performance of the Nutcracker returns to PPAC this weekend. Don’t miss this classic! Details here.

Handel’s Messiah Saturday at The Vets (Providence). One of the greatest pieces of classical opera ever penned, Handel’s “Messiah,” composed in 1741, is always a seasonal highlight. Details here.

Tammy Pescatelli at the Greenwich Odeum (East Greenwich). Arguably one of the hardest working women in comedy today, Tammy Pescatelli brings brassy sexiness with a bold female voice of witty sarcasm to her audiences, holding her own on the topics of sports, television, dating and family life using tongue-in-cheek humor. She is relatable to every audience member-male & female. After seeing Tammy perform, nearly everyone wishes she was their best friend or sister! Details here.

Miss America at Mohegan Sun (Uncasville, CT). The annual competition highlights a diverse group of young students and professionals who are advancing the message of female strength, independence, and empowerment through their efforts in the areas of scholarship, talent and social impact. The Miss America Organization has ushered in a new era of progressiveness and inclusiveness, led by an all-female leadership team. Details here.

The Gift of the Magi / Balls / The First Noel at the Arctic Playhouse (West Warwick). “Gift of the Magi” is about a couple who are young, terribly in love, and flat broke. This is a beautiful, sympathetic, and warmly human account of O. Henry’s well-known story. “Balls,” by George Cameron Grant, is a hilarious conversation between five multi-colored Christmas ornaments with strong personalities tucked snugly in a box. In “The First Noel,” a homeless and hungry Noel returns to the site of her childhood, now a Chinese take-out, but will her journey get her the handout she wants, or the nurturing she needs? Details here.
